MLA welcomes Tom Ashbrook, host of National Public Radio’s
“On Point” produced by WBUR Boston. Tom was raised on an Illinois farm, studied history in India and at Yale, and was a surveyor and dynamiter in the Alaskan oilfields before taking his first job in news at the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong. An award-winning journalist in print and broadcast, he served as Tokyo bureau chief, foreign editor and deputy managing editor at the Boston Globe. He spent ten years in Asia, and has worked as a correspondent around the world: Beijing, Moscow, Mumbai, the Balkans, Rwanda, Somalia as well as several other places. In 2001, he was enlisted to host emergency coverage of the 9/11 attacks for NPR. That coverage grew into the nationally-aired news and interview show “On Point” which is produced by WBUR, Boston.
Tom Ashbrook was awarded the Livingston Prize for National Reporting and named a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University before taking a four-year plunge into Internet entrepreneurship, chronicled in his book The Leap.
