Encounters with History: Teaching from Primary Sources and Original Historical Artifacts
This program will introduce librarians to methods and sources for teaching and training directly from primary sources. From medieval and Renaissance manuscripts to the books and papers of America's founding fathers, we will discuss resources and methodologies that can excite and challenge learners and library users about history through immediate encounters with these original historical sources in the reading room of the Department of Rare Books and Manuscripts of the Boston Public Library. Curators from the Boston Public Library will also show the wealth of information from primary sources available online.
Managing Change in a Changing World
An agile organization is able to quickly adapt to changing circumstances; it is ready for anything. The agile organization innovates rapidly, and immediately tailors products and services to customer needs. -- Susan M. Heathfield, Your Guide to Human Resources Newsletter. If circumstances surrounding libraries aren't changing rapidly, then nothing is. From new social and communication technologies, to the radical change in development of an entire generation that requires changes in service, libraries must learn to become agile organizations. Hear how the Chief of Public Services of a large, urban public library and Head of Special Collections and Archives at a large university library handled change in their institutions.
