Attention!MLS Candidates and First Time MLA Conference Attendees are eligible to apply for the Kay Bader Scholarship to attend the 2009 MLA Conference!
MLA is offering eight scholarships to help defray the costs of attending the Conference. The scholarships are available to current and future library staff wishing to attend the conference at the Massachusetts Mutual Center in Springfield, MA, May 5-8, 2009. One applicant selected from each region plus two MLS students will be selected.
Who is eligible? • Applicants must be first time MLA Annual Conference attendees. • Applicants must be able to attend at least one day of the conference. • Applicants must be students in an MLS. program OR currently employed in a Massachusetts library.
How do I apply? Applicants must fill out the application form and write a 300-500 word statement answering one of the following questions: • How do libraries sustain communities? • How do you expect attending the MLA Conference will renew or refresh you? • MLA was founded 119 years ago in 1890, imagine and describe a library in 119 years - 2128. Completed applications must be received by 3/20/09. Winners will be notified by telephone by 4/3/09.
What does the scholarship cover? The scholarships cover the cost of registration on the days of attendance. MLA will also cover half the cost of accommodations (single or double room) for scholarship winners. The scholarship does not cover transportation. Scholarship winners will also receive a complimentary one-year membership to the Massachusetts Library Association.
If I win a scholarship, what are my obligations? Scholarship winners need only to attend one day of the conference and are free to choose whatever sessions most interest them. Scholarship winners may be asked to write a brief account of their MLA conference experience for the MLA newsletter, Bay State Libraries.
