MASSACHUSETTS LIBRARY TRUSTEES ASSOCIATION
P.O. BOX 271
SOUTH EASTON, MA 02375
The Association was established in Massachusetts in September of
1952. Its purpose is to foster excellence in public library service
within the Commonwealth by providing for the continuing education of
trustees, encouraging trustees to become advocates for public
library services, and promoting the enactment of legislation and
funding favorable to public library services.
The Association issues a quarterly newsletter called UPDATE and
holds an annual conference, as well as occasional regional
conferences on topics of general interest to trustees. The President
of MLTA serves for two years, as do the other officers (Vice
President, Secretary and Treasurer) and are elected by the
membership at large during the annual meeting in November of each
year. The Association's affairs are managed by the Board of
Directors (two representing each of the six regions) at regular
meetings held during the year. Annual reports are made to the
general membership by the President, Secretary and Treasurer.
Legislative updates are provided regularly to members through the
newsletter and through occasional special mailings on important
topics facing trustees.
MLTA board members and officers work closely with the Board of
Library Commissioners and with our trustee liaison from the BLC on
matters affecting libraries and library services in the
Commonwealth. Assistance is available to all trustees through MLTA
and the Board of Library Comissioners in resolving issues facing
individual boards, as well as more general matters affecting all
trustees and public libraries in Massachusetts.
