Advocating Effectively for Your Library: A Workshop Times are tough for libraries, with cutbacks on both the state and local levels. In order to help trustees, librarians and friends of libraries become better advocates for their libraries, the Massachusetts Library Trustees Association (MLTA) is sponsoring an Advocacy Workshop on Saturday, May 1 at the Worcester Public Library. This half-day program will give participants the insight of experts, much useful information, and great tips. There is no charge to attend, and library directors are encouraged to bring along a trustee from their board and learn as a team. The MLTA is delighted to present Jan Finkelstein as the keynote speaker. Highly regarded for her ability to both de-mystify the advocacy process and motivate her audience, she has a proven track record in helping libraries mount successful bond campaigns, obtain municipal and state approvals, get town funds and raise support for new programs. A panel of your peers will give their testimonies on how they successfully advocated for their libraries. They are eager to share their stories, which include overcoming budget cuts and engineering a successful override. What do your legislators think of your lobbying? Come find out directly from one of our state’s representatives. You may be surprised by what you hear. The workshop is intended not only motivate its attendees, but leave them prepared with practical advice on how, where and to whom to speak on behalf of their libraries. Handouts will include nuts-and-bolts information to make your advocacy work easier. Please pre-register by Wednesday, April 28th, either by email or US mail. If using email, please provide the information requested below in your rsvp. After April 28th, you may call 781-246-1273 to see if there is still space available. On-site check-in (with coffee!) will open at 9:30 a.m. The program will commence promptly at 10:00, include lunch on-site, and wrap-up at 2:00 p.m. The Worcester Public Library (Main Branch) is located at 3 Salem Square, and is easy to reach: just 20 minutes from Rte 495 and only 10 minutes off the Mass. Turnpike. Driving directions may be found on WPL’s website: worcpublib.org The Library opens at 9:00; arrive early and check out their Books’n’More Store. ------------- clip and send section below the dotted line ------------------------------- I would like to register for the May 1st Advocacy Workshop in Worcester.
